Unlike the traditional metal amalgam option, cosmetic fillings, also known as white or tooth-colored fillings, are made from composite resin to seamlessly match the color of your teeth. Due to their camouflaged appearance and proven durability, our Grand Rapids, MI, dentists use this type of filling to treat cavities if they are detected during a routine teeth cleaning or oral exam.

Our top priority before getting started is to make sure you’re comfortable. To do this, we will administer local anesthesia to numb the tooth that’s being treated. Once your tooth is properly numb, our dentists will remove all decayed tooth matter inside before cleansing the area and filling the hole with composite resin material. The resin will need time to set or cure properly which can be sped up with an LED light.
Once hardened, we’ll check your bite to see if any adjustments need to be made. Our dentists don’t want the filling to affect your natural bite pattern, so we’ll have you bite down a few times on a special blue paper, known as articulating paper. Any high or “off” spots will be identified with this paper, and we’ll grind away the resin until everything feels normal and even.
The entire process will only take a few minutes, but this can vary depending on how many cavities you have. After all is said and done, you will likely experience some numbness for a few hours. You will be able to return to work or school after your appointment, however. Best of all, no one will notice your white fillings!
Many of our patients appreciate that composite fillings can go undetected by family, friends, and co-workers. They’re also especially useful for teeth that show when you smile and talk.
Composite fillings possess many advantages when compared to their amalgam alternative. Our dentists know how distracting metal can be in your smile. Because of this, we’ll exclusively recommend discreet tooth-colored fillings if you have a cavity.
